“A strong chin and jaw line is equated with having character and mental fortitude. One of my patients said it that aspect of her appearance was more important in court than her Harvard law degree.”

There are non surgical chin augmentation procedures. Both the chin and jaw line can be enhanced non surgically using Restylane® or Radiesse®. I believe Radiesse® is superior, and my patients are thrilled with the immediate, dramatic results that can be achieved.
Surgically, many more varieties of chin augmentation exist than you might think. At one time, a simple chin implant was the universal answer. Today, there is a large menu of options for chin augmentation. Chin implants are still popular and represent a long term and stable addition to the mandible bone. They are good at adding chin projection on profile which can make the nose look smaller and widening the chin on the frontal view. They visually lengthening the submental plane(from chin to Adam’s Apple) making the neck look better, and can serve to elevate and support the mentalis muscle (the muscle that covers the implant,) which helps elevate the lower lip facilitating mouth closure.
They are not a good choice, however, if the crease between the chin and the lower lip is very deep, there is significant asymmetry of the central aspect of the mandible, or when what is necessary aesthetically involves a vertical lengthening of the chin. In these cases, augmentation can be accomplished with either fat grafting or Radiesse® alone, or in combination with an implant depending on the amount of augmentation required.
Sometimes a chin augmentation is a byproduct of a neck lift. My submental neck lift tightens the platysma muscle adding support, volume and forward projection to the mentalis muscle. The patient gets a flat beautiful neck and a chin enhancement as a bonus. If more definition is desired an implant can be added through the same incision.
A “witch’s chin deformity” can be corrected surgically. In cases where the chin muscle contracts and creates deep crease between the submental plane and the chin muscle during animation (smiling) an incision can be made under the chin to treat this condition. Finally, stretching of the mentalis muscle (from removal of long standing chin implants) can be repaired by elevating and re-suspending the mentalis muscle.
