The concept of safe permanent and affordable removal of fat cells from areas which are genetically programmed with too many fat cells has been a focus of non surgical technology for over a decade. Zeltiq’s technology which focuses on the premise that fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the overlying skin cells allows permanent removal of excess fat cell numbers safely and reliably with minimal or no risk of contour irregularity. This technique freezes fat cells through a process called “Cryolipolysis™.” While fat cells are dying, the surrounding tissue is spared. A gel pad is applied to the area to be reduced. During the procedure, tissue is drawn into a cup with mild vacuum pressure. By pressing the device against the area to be treated and then becoming cold enough to target only the fat cells in that area, fat cells begin to shrink. The body reacts with an inflammatory response which causes the body to naturally dispose of the damaged fat cells. Keep in mind this is a treatment to refine contour. It is not intended to act as a weight loss technique.

Zeltiq has extensive experience of hundreds of thousands of cases where any body area that can be shaped into a roll and therefore fit the applicator system can be addressed with almost a certainty of a positive outcome. There are two sizes of applicators. The large applicator works for lower belly rolls. The smaller one helps shrink hip rolls or “muffin top.” Common areas that would most benefit from Coolsculpting™ include abs, love handles or flanks, back rolls, bra strap rolls, arms and inner thighs. Male breasts have also been successfully treated.
Stubborn regions of excess adipose cells are reliably treated without contour irregularity or concern for skin shrinkage with a resultant 25% in fat cell thickness with every treatment without irregularities. Areas of concern can be treated over until a desired outcome is achieved. The procedure takes roughly one hour per area so most patients attempt regional reduction incrementally. A very small percentage of patients experience post-operative discomfort that can last weeks, but is always self limited. Final effects take 2-4 months as fat is gradually and naturally eliminated from the body, ultimately revealing a new shape.
Coolsculpting™ is effective at regional reductions with zero downtime and no need for special post op garments. During the hour long procedure, time can be optimized by engaging in simple relaxation, working on a laptop or iPad, or conducting business by phone. Some patients opt for having ancillary minor procedures done such as injectables or skin care.
Certain patients may be better served from an aesthetic or economic and anti- aging prospective by having an operative liposculpture. This is why the pre-procedure consultation is so important. Properly done liposuction is truly life changing because it influences and permanently alters genetics. Therefore decade by decade the liposculpture procedure changes the course in which one’s body ages. It is important for the patient to realize that there is no substitute for a carefully sculpted body addressing all areas of adipose cell excess in one operative session so that the patient’s new silhouette ages harmoniously throughout their lives. While there is no machine that can accomplish what a surgeon’s eye, aesthetic judgment and carefully controlled cannula can accomplish, the concept of non surgical, zero downtime and economic feasibility holds great appeal to a certain segment of the patient population. It is important to note that ideal candidates are those who are in good shape but seeking a modest change. These fat reduction techniques will not take the place of a healthy lifestyle or diet.
