It is the surgeon, not the technology that determines the quality of your result. I strongly believe the patient must be aware of two issues when considering lipoplasty. Number one, conservatism, accuracy and experience can prevent 99% of post operative issues, and second, that it is the surgeon and not the technology (Smart Lipo®, Vaser®, Laser lipo, etc, etc) that determines the quality of the result. . The various types of liposuction can be confusing and overwhelming (all the names are simply marketing ploys.). This is why you should choose a cosmetic surgeon who is experienced and able to explain the differences with ease.
The advent of the tumescent technique is the single most important advance in liposuction. Without question, the single most important advance in lipoplasty body contouring is the advent of the tumescent technique around 1990. With tumescent liposuction, fat cell removal is more accurate, there is less pain and significantly less blood loss, so that more volume can safely be removed during a surgical session. Smaller cannula size leads to a smoother contour, like “whittling away the fat as opposed to chopping it away.”In short, tumescent liposuction techniques and the use of micro-cannulas allow for a more metered treatment, and a controlled removal of fat. Depending on the patients’ individual fat characteristics and the region being treated, I will use either power assisted liposuction or simply do it carefully by hand.
Diet and exercise DO count. Diet and exercise may not help eliminate stubborn fat pockets before liposuction, but after surgery there is a synergistic effort between what I can do and what you can do that leads to the best result. I am ready, willing and able to coach you here.
Liposuction is usually not a localized prescription. A “wide angle lens” should be used to view all your problem areas so that you age as flawlessly as possible. Fat does not come back, but when you gain weight your problem area may have simply relocated because of shortsighted surgical planning. When properly accomplished, lipoplasty should have lifelong benefits that change your aging genetics.
Non invasive fat removal has disadvantages when compared with surgical fat removal. While non invasive fat removal (Zeltiq®, now called Coolsculpting, ®Zerona®, etc) is real, you may still want to consider surgery. More areas can be treated more completely with a relatively rapid recovery and at an overall reduced cost.
Spot areas can be treated with Ulthera® . Ulthera® can help smooth skin and reduce spot areas non-operatively, much as Lipodissolve® did in the past, making previously untreatable areas targets for aesthetic improvement.
Cellulite is treatable. We can treat cellulite symptoms, but not in a global fashion or significantly reverse the underlying disease process. The most significant depressions can be easily released and fat grafted to support and smooth the overlying skin. There may be a non-invasive machine for cellulite on the horizon
