Restylane is a gel that is injected into the skin’s dermal layer to restore natural facial contours and eliminate lines and wrinkling. When injected in tiny amounts in areas prone to wrinkling - such as the nasolabial folds, the lines that extend from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth - Restylane seamlessly expands underneath the skin by absorbing and binding with water molecules from surrounding tissue, and in the process smoothing and plumping overlying skin. Restylane is quickly administered during an office visit and its results are fast and effective.

After application a small amount of swelling occurs that varies with the individual. But in general, visible swelling lasts for 1-2 days for nasolabial fold treatments and 2-3 days for lips. Short-term skin redness is also variable but easily concealed with makeup.

Compared to other injectable substances used for skin rejuvenation, like collagen, Restylane offers several powerful advantages:

  • Aesthetic benefits last much longer, in many cases for up to a full year

  • There is no risk of allergic reactions

  • Effects fade very gradually with time, without the possibility of residual scarring that can sometimes accompany other types of injections

Restylane’s active ingredient is NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid). Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide (complex sugar molecule) that is found in a vast array of species and occurs naturally in the human body, playing important roles in proper joint elasticity, eye shape, and skin volume. The substance was first employed in diverse medical applications such as orthopedic joint repair and eye surgery.

To harvest hyaluronic acid for medical use, a universally-proven biotechnology is employed. A carefully controlled fermentation process generates raw hyaluronic acid, which is extracted and refined to absolute purity. The molecular structure is then slightly modified to extend its chemical stability from a matter of days to up to a year. It is then incorporated in Restylane gel.

This biodegradable substance has an extraordinary safety record, and products based on hyaluronic acid have been used with more than 30 million patients over the past two decades. Restylane is a powerful, safe, and long-lasting tool in today’s arsenal of skin rejuvenating, volume enhancing therapies.
